How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019 Film) Review

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World movie poster

Nearly ten years ago, I fell in love with the original How to Train Your Dragon film. Unfortunately it takes a LONG time for most animated films to be made, so it took four years for the 2nd film (which wasn’t as good) and another five for this third (and allegedly final) film. I thought about seeing it in theaters back during winter, but other things came up. But what did I think of the last movie in the series?

Hiccup and toothless How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World

The film takes place not terribly long after the events of the last film. Hiccup is now the chief and his loyal dragon Toothless is still at his side. Luckily Hiccup has his mom at his side now after her many years away. The young leader also has a promising leading lady at his side with Astrid. Their little community has become an utopia for dragons.

But Hiccup soon leads a mission to rescue captured dragons in nearby areas. While the mission is a success, it leads his enemies to recruit a terrible man. Grimmel the Grisly is his name, and dragon-hunting is his favorite game. He was the person responsible for wiping out all night-fury dragons except for two.

One was Toothless, while the other is a female with white scales. She is dubbed Light Fury by Astrid and the two dragons have a rough, but sweet relationship with one another. Hiccup’s greatest mission is not getting these two to fall in love, but for them to find a world that is safe from humans. A hidden world where all the dragons had once come from. It’s going to be their toughest quest yet, but can they do it?

Overall I’d say the final film is about on par with the 2nd movie, but they both fall short of the original. I also forgot a lot of the plot of the first two movies, so it took me a bit to kind of remember who everyone was and whatnot. Though I am glad they are wanting to end the series with three movies. Better to end out good, than after a bunch of mediocre ones.

Score: B
