An old king in what is now present-day Spain, named Alfonso X of the Kingdom of Castile was quite known for his knowledge of astronomy. Alfonso was a Christian himself, but he did admit that the universe was too big for us to understand especially since he thought (according to his religion) that the universe was created for mankind. He was quoted saying “If the Lord Almighty had consulted me before embarking on creation thus, I should have recommended something simpler.” on the subject.
