Despite having thousands of Kanji (Chinese characters) to learn, plus the letters for Hiragana, Katakana, and Romaji; most of Japan knows how to read and write. The literacy rate is well over 99% which is similar to any Western nation that uses a much simpler alphabet and writing system. Got to admire hard work.
