James Cook was the first European to have formal contact with natives in Hawaii. He actually tried to name the Hawaiian Islands, the Sandwich Islands after an English Earl. James Cook wouldn’t make it back home as he died in Hawaii after a quarrel with Hawaiians went very sour and he was killed in a fight.
