Robert Smalls was born a slave in South Carolina in the year 1839. During the Civil War he managed to take command of a Confederate ship while its officers spent the night on land. He steered the ship into Union-controlled waters and greatly help the Union side in the Civil War especially as he knew Confederate secrets like signals. He later won election several times and served in the House of Representatives in Congress.
