Bill Laimbeer’s Combat Basketball (SNES) Review

Bill Laimbeer's Combat Basketball SNES Boxart

I remember reading how this was a really bad SNES game, and when I saw it at Funcoland many years ago, I didn’t even want to buy it for the 75 cents asking price. But hey, you always should try new things right? Even if they are downright terrible.

By the way if you’re wondering who Bill Laimbeer is don’t bother looking. He was some NBA player back in the day, and later on became a famous coach in the WNBA. So what’s the deal with his combat basketball? Well it’s set in the future of course. Apparently he would still be athletic enough to play in the future right?

Well I don’t care how physically fit I am, because this game is awful. Combat basketball kinda plays like basketball meets hockey. Instead of stealing a ball, you tackle and then steal. Which really isn’t hard to do. Oh and you control the whole game with just the D-pad and one button. Aren’t there several other fine buttons the SNES to use? Well I’m sure Bill thinks making one button be both pass and shoot would not be confusing.

He would be wrong. Every time I try to shoot a goal, it will always miss the net and land out of bounds. Making the game essentially half-broken to begin with. The game is fun for about 30 seconds, and never become fun again after you realize the whole thing is pointless. I’m glad they retired this series with the first game.
