Abraham Lincoln lived before the Secret Service, so he had to rely on a more basic form of security. One of his bodyguards claimed to have been dismissed during Ford’s Theaters and went to the tavern in his new free time. This gave John Wilkes Booth an easy window to assassinate Lincoln.
