While Italy was known as one of the major countries in the Axis powers, it actually switched sides before World War II was over. Mussolini was overthrown and his subordinates followed, leading Italy to kick the fascists out of power and join the Allied forces.
The Allies had to invade Italy first though. My father was a soldier in that campaign.
