Mary Dyer was a English puritan-turned Quaker who lived in Colonial America. While she was once a puritan, the puritans themselves thought Quakers were the worst of the “heretics” and had them banished from the area, especially from Boston. She defied the puritans a few times, choosing to be a martyr. She died by hanging in 1660.
