In 1590, daimyo Toyotomi Hideyoshi banned slavery in Japan which had existed since the third century. He was disgusted that Japanese people were sold to the Portuguese and spread across the world, so he banned it all together along with banning Christianity. The King of Portugal also made laws limiting slavery in Asia because of how it was impacting conversion to Catholicism.
