Things I Hate: Lucy (2014 Film)

I had heard about Lucy when the trailer appeared right before I saw Captain America: The Winter Solider in the theater. Lucy seemed to be a promising film, and I have always been wowed by Scarlett Johansson’s role as Black Widow in the Marvel films since Iron Man 2.

Johansson plays Lucy, who is visiting Taiwan and meets up with her new boyfriend. He tricks her into delivering a mysterious briefcase, and before she knows it chaos unfolds. Bad people try to use her like a puppet, and they put a strange item in her stomach. When it leaks, the strange material causes her brain to reach levels never humanly possible.

Lucy starts to have powers on par with a god, but realizes that when her brain reaches its maximum that she could die. She gets more powerful by the hour, so she reaches out to Professor Samuel Norman for help. He had theories about what would happen if the brain could reach new limits, but even he is puzzled.

Overall Lucy was quite a bit of a disappointment. I had heard some negative opinions and lot of them have solid points. For one the movie talks about the idea of normal humans only using “ten percent of their brains” except that is not science and in truth just an urban myth. Lucy using her powers is often pretty cool, but the plot gets really weird and some of it doesn’t make much sense. I enjoyed some of it, but the movie surely didn’t reach its full potential.

  1. I’ve never seen Scarlett Johannson in any other film role which could match her performance and portrayal of the Black Widow in the MCU.
