Richard Neville, 5th Earl of Salisbury was a leading figure for the House of York during the first phase of the Wars of the Roses. When the Yorkists originally lost, he was captured. While it was possible for him to have ransomed himself with his insane wealth, the local population beheaded him as he had been a harsh lord during peaceful times.
