In 1933, there was a political conspiracy known as the Business Plot that was orchestrated by far right activists in the United States. They wanted to overthrow President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and replace him with General Smedley Butler as dictator. The plan obviously was not successful and it was actually Smedley Butler that rejected the idea and helped the government put an end to it. Though no arrests were made and the media ridiculed the story at the time.
