R. Norris Williams was a tennis player who happened to be one of many passengers on the RMS Titanic. He survived the sinking but doctors advised that he had to have his legs amputated due to frostbite. He refused to have his legs removed and actually recovered and went on to play tennis professionally and successfully after the sinking.
