The sinking of the USS Maine was a major catalyst for America starting the Spanish-American War with Spain. It seems very likely that the explosion was actually an accident from explosives on the ship itself, but yellow journalism in America at the time laid the blame incorrectly on Spain.
Learned this after going to Puerto Rico. The history is very interesting.
