I learned that there was some friendly animosity between Spain and Portugal when we were in Lisbon many years ago. I accidentally said, “gracias” to a shop keeper and she reminded me vehemently that it should be “obigado.” She wasn’t angry and laughed about it, but it was an interesting and fun encounter.
