The motto of the British Monarchy is Dieu Et Mon Droit which is French for “God and my right.” It was originally used by Richard the Lionheart as a battle cry. The Norman kings of England and their successors spoke French (and not English) for centuries.
I just read about this for the first time when I saw it on a building (the old British Empire Building) in Rockefeller Center in NYC!
