Things I Like: Buttercup (The Princess Bride)

Robin Wright as Princess Buttercup The Princess Bride 1987 film

Buttercup is a pivotal character in The Princess Bride, as she’s technically the namesake and the purpose of the story. Despite that, she’s far from the best of the main characters. It was also one of the rare roles where Robin Wright is actually a sweet and innocent girl. Only a few years later, she played one of the greatest supervillains on film with Jenny Curran on Forrest Gump.

She’s technically a simple girl that gets promoted to a princess. But she’s kidnapped and if it wasn’t for Westley pretending to be a deadly pirate, Buttercup most likely would have died by a weapon of Vizzini.

It’s a good thing that Prince Humperdinck actually didn’t really love her. Because Westley coming back in the picture does complicate the whole royal marriage thing.

And when Princess Buttercup is taken back by Prince Humperdinck, I think technically they got married. Because I don’t remember the ceremony getting interrupted to the point where they couldn’t finish the ceremony.

But her and Westley manage to out wit him and capture him. So if they were legally married, I would consider that an easy annulment.

I also liked Robin as a sweet girl. She seems to be unlikable in most of her other roles.
