Fun Facts and Trivia About Blue’s Clues

Fun Facts about Blue's Clues Nickelodeon television show

The initial ideas for Blue’s Clues date back to the 1990s, during a time when parents were frustrated with the prevalence of violent cartoons for children. Outside of PBS, it was difficult to find alternatives. Blue’s Clues was heavily inspired by Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, with Fred Rogers himself cited as a major influence.

The show was partially created by a developer who had previously worked on Sesame Street but was dissatisfied with its format.

Steve Burns was chosen as the host from a pool of 10,000 auditioners. However, he never intended for Blue’s Clues to define his entire career or to remain in children’s programming. He ultimately left the show when he started going bald.

Interestingly, Blue was originally planned to be a cat but was later changed to a puppy.

His character was succeeded by his on-screen brother, Joe, played by Donovan Patton.

At the time of its premiere, Blue’s Clues became the highest-rated debut of any Nickelodeon show, helping it grow into one of the biggest names in cable cartoons.

The show also had several international adaptations, with hosts like Kevin in the United Kingdom and Javier in Mexico.

The show was so successful that, within just 18 months, it became as recognizable to children as Sesame Street and Barney & Friends.

The voice actress for Blue was chosen because she was the only team member who sounded the most like a puppy.

Although the original run of Blue’s Clues ended years ago, Nickelodeon recently rebooted it with a new series titled Blue’s Clues & You.

Blue’s Clues was revolutionary for children’s programming, being one of the first shows to incorporate intentional pauses to give kids more time to think about questions.

While Steve’s green-striped shirt is iconic on TV, in reality, it was actually blue and white.
