The original mines in the first version of Minesweeper were intentionally designed to resemble naval mines.
The popularity of Minesweeper led to the creation of several copycats, including Minesweeper X, Crossmines, and Minehunt. However, many believe that Minesweeper itself was inspired by the 1983 ZX Spectrum game Mined-Out.
Fans of Minesweeper were very disappointed when Microsoft chose not to include the game by default in the release of Windows 8.
Later versions of the game made it easier by ensuring that the first click a player makes will never land on a mine.
People have become very competitive about Minesweeper, with one notable player completing the Expert mode in under 30 seconds.
