Sofie Fatale is a minor but notable character in Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill franchise. Her character is supposed to be half French and half Japanese, although her actress, Julie Dreyfus, is of French and Jewish descent.

Sofie is the best friend, second-in-command, and personal lawyer of Kill Bill: Volume 1’s main antagonist, O-Ren Ishii. It’s made clear that she is not a fighter like her boss or the underlings beneath her.

Beatrix Kiddo eventually ambushes Sofie and uses her to call out O-Ren Ishii’s name, setting the stage for their climactic showdown.

Although the Bride promises to keep her alive, she brutally slices off one of Sofie’s arms and later stuffs her in a trunk, dumping her at a hospital when it’s all over. Beatrix wanted someone to personally tell Bill what had happened—and what was coming.

This moment leaves it ambiguous whether Bill would kill her for her failure, but according to Tarantino, Sofie survives and eventually inherits Bill’s fortune after his epic demise.
