Fun Facts and Trivia About Chapstick

Fun Facts trivia and things you never knew about chapstick lip balm chapped lips prevention medicine

ChapStick is not technically a generic term, although it’s often used as one. It’s actually a trademarked name for a lip balm brand owned by the Suave Brands Company.

The ChapStick brand alone generates about $142 million in revenue each year.

ChapStick was originally invented as a type of lip balm in the early 1880s by Charles Brown Fleet. The original product looked like a wickless candle wrapped in tin foil and struggled to gain popularity. Dr. Fleet eventually sold the rights to the product for just $5 to the man who turned it into a commercial success.

ChapStick still uses the same logo from 1935, which they paid an artist just $15 to create.

While different varieties of ChapStick have different ingredients, the main formula typically includes camphor, beeswax, menthol, petrolatum, phenol, vitamin E, aloe, and oxybenzone. However, the European Union and Canada do not allow ChapStick to include phenol in their products.

ChapStick also has sunblock properties, with some varieties offering SPF ratings as high as 50.

Interestingly, ChapStick is approved for use in space and is regularly used by astronauts.

Unofficially, ChapStick can be applied to small cuts, including paper cuts, to help stop bleeding.

ChapStick can also be cleverly used to unstick a stuck zipper—if you know the trick.

  1. I didn’t know the trick with zippers, but I have used it for cuts (and didn‘t know anyone else did).
