Things I Like: Jor-El (Original Superman Movies)

Jor-El in Superman 1978 movie Marlon Brando

Jor-El is a very important character in the original Superman movies, despite being dead from the start of the story and having very little screen time. Jor-El, the father of Kal-El (Superman), has had many incarnations by 2025, but this is my favorite. Ironically, Marlon Brando apparently took this role mainly just for the money, and he did not bother to learn his lines, instead reading them secretly from a clever “cue card” on the baby’s diaper.

But his role is the same as in most incarnations of Superman’s father. He and his wife prepare to send their son into space as their planet is about to explode. The way they designed his suit still looks really impressive.

Any parent in the world with even a shred of humanity could understand why they would send their child to such a mysterious fate. I would gladly make the same sacrifice for my son.

I think he still gives some strange messages to his son despite being long dead, but it is heartbreaking to witness the demise of Earth’s greatest champion’s parents.

And the Kryptonians who ignored their planet’s doom for “reasons” sound ridiculous, but I have seen millions of people bully a minor online for caring about the planet instead of staying quiet and minding their own business.
