The film is adapted from the novel of the same name by John Steinbeck, though it covers only the last portion of the book.

It was released in 1955 in the United States and is one of the earliest major roles of James Dean.

East of Eden was the only one of James Dean’s three major films to be released during his lifetime. Dean received a posthumous Oscar nomination for Best Actor for this film, becoming the first actor to receive a posthumous acting nomination in Academy history.

Director Elia Kazan originally considered Marlon Brando for the role of Cal and Montgomery Clift for Aron, but they were regarded as too old.

Dean was cast as Cal Trask, and his performance is often cited as perfectly suited for the part. Steinbeck himself reportedly said, upon meeting Dean, “Jesus Christ, he IS Cal!”

The film is structured around the biblical story of Cain and Abel, brothers competing for their father’s love.

Although set in Monterey and the Salinas Valley in California, many scenes were filmed in Mendocino County north of San Francisco.

The film’s world premiere took place at the Astor Theatre in Times Square, New York, as a benefit for the Actors Studio. Among the notable attendees at the premiere were Marilyn Monroe and John Steinbeck himself.

The older actor Raymond Massey, who played the father Adam Trask, did not like Dean off-camera, which added to the authenticity of their father and son conflict on-screen.

The character of Kate, also known as Cathy, the boys’ mother, is portrayed by Jo Van Fleet, who won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for the role.

One small mistake appears in the carnival scene where a 50 star United States flag is shown, even though during the period of the film, before the First World War, there were only 48 states.

The film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress in 2016 as being culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.

The film has had a lasting legacy, with actors such as Leonardo DiCaprio citing East of Eden as a film that made them obsessed with movies.
