Things I Like: Floyd Lawton/Deadshot (DCEU)

Will Smith as Deadshot In Suicide Squad DCEU film 2016

Floyd Lawton, also known as Deadshot, was one of the most notable characters in Suicide Squad (2016), second only to Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn in terms of popularity. At the time, Will Smith playing an antihero in the DC Extended Universe was a big deal. His star power helped carry the film’s commercial success.

Traditionally, Deadshot is depicted as Caucasian in most DC comics, animated series, and spin-offs. However, once he’s suited up in full gear, the focus shifts more to the character’s skill set than his appearance, and Will Smith still embodied the role convincingly.

In the comics, Deadshot is a longtime adversary of Batman, and the film keeps that history intact. The Dark Knight is the one who ultimately puts him behind bars. Like his comic counterpart, Lawton has an almost unmatched accuracy with firearms of any kind. It does raise the question of how Batman consistently manages to defeat someone who practically never misses.

Within the Squad, Deadshot functions as the de facto leader. While they technically answer to Rick Flag, it’s Lawton’s experience and combat ability that often hold the team together. Without him, the mission could have easily ended in disaster, similar to the high body count seen in the sequel movie The Suicide Squad.

And for saving the world? The reward was only ten years shaved off their already lengthy prison sentences. Deadshot at least negotiates visitation rights with his daughter. There’s even a subtle layer to those scenes, when he helps her with math, it parallels the physics and calculations behind his deadly precision. After 2016, Smith never returned to the role, and the character was absent from the sequel. In-universe, we’re left to assume that Floyd Lawton remained incarcerated, likely spending years behind bars after the events of the film.
