Things I Like: Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (DCEU)

Mark Strong as Dr. Thaddeus Sivana in Shazam movie DCEU

Dr. Thaddeus Sivana may have an awful name, but he was one of the better villains in the DC Extended Universe. Originally, he and Shazam were not properties of DC Comics, but after a lawsuit over the character, DC ended up with the rights. The character, who was often marketed as Captain Marvel, was eventually absorbed into the DC Universe as if he had always existed there. I am not sure if Sivana is always Shazam’s biggest or baddest villain, but I would not be surprised. His actor, Mark Strong, did a pretty good job as well.

I thought his backstory of almost becoming Shazam (like Billy Batson did) when he was a kid was a pretty interesting twist. Instead, he ends up getting similar powers from a group of evil demons known as the Seven Deadly Sins. He immediately uses his new abilities to settle old family drama with his dad, his brother, and even the innocent board members of his father’s company.

I did think it was kind of crazy how he was able to make Billy Batson look really ashamed in their first superhero fight. I know the new Shazam was a little overconfident, but he should not have been that embarrassed in a one on one fight.

Their fight was not exactly the best in the DC Extended Universe, but it was still decent. I would have preferred if it had not been shot with a nighttime background, but it is what it is. They also do that thing where Billy Batson’s foster family shares his powers and defeats Sivana as a team, which is pretty cool.

Dr. Thaddeus Sivana jail cell cameo in Shazam Fury of the Gods movie DCEU Mark Strong

I had actually forgotten that he had a cameo at the very end credits of Shazam: Fury of the Gods. He had been locked away in prison for two years when a strange caterpillar-like villain delivers a message to him. There is a big setup for him breaking out and getting revenge on his adolescent nemesis. However, the DC Extended Universe basically imploded shortly after that, so the end credits scene ended up meaning absolutely nothing.
