Black Mask isn’t exactly the most well-known Batman villain, but he has his own solid lore. Like the vast majority of Batman villains in the DCEU, he doesn’t actually fight Batman on screen. Instead, he serves as the main antagonist in the Harley Quinn-led film Birds of Prey. I think Ewan McGregor did a good job acting as this character for what they were going for, even though he’s not very likable.

For one, Black Mask usually always wears his black mask, so instead of getting the classic villain, we really get the flamboyant Roman Sionis. They probably should have hired somebody a lot less handsome, because even while being unlikeable, he still has his own kind of charm.

He’s still a criminal mastermind when the sun goes down. I don’t remember exactly why he was trying to kill Harley Quinn without looking it up, but apparently, it was just because she was annoying. With her and the Joker officially broken up, she no longer has the same kind of protection. Though if Black Mask was really worried about the Joker, I wouldn’t exactly risk it just for one annoying clown girl.

In Birds of Prey, it all comes down to a scene where he grabs one of Harley’s friends and basically takes the poor girl hostage. It’s a little funny because I know what comic Black Mask is capable of, and in the movie, despite the girl power vibe, they all would have ended up in a six-foot grave.

But they manage to surprise him, kick him off a dock, and immediately surprise him with a grenade. It destroys him to the point that even comic book logic couldn’t really suggest he could come back from death. While it’s kind of a thrilling scene at first, it feels a little anticlimactic because it happens so suddenly, leaving no time to enjoy his downfall.
