Things I Hate: Barbara Minerva/Cheetah (DCEU)

Kristen Wiig as Barbara Minerva Cheetah in Wonder Woman 1984 film DCEU

Barbara Minerva/Cheetah is actually supposed to be Wonder Woman’s most famous adversary, similar to how Batman has the Joker or Superman has Lex Luthor. But they really fumbled her hard in the DC Extended Universe, and I don’t exactly blame Kristen Wiig for it, but rather the script and the direction.

She starts out as just a regular woman named Barbara Minerva, and she actually has a liking for Diana Prince. But she eventually gets her hands on the Dreamstone and makes an envious wish to become much like Wonder Woman herself.

For the most part, it actually kind of works. She slowly starts to feel her strength come to be until she’s kind of a force to be reckoned with, and she even gets the upper hand on Wonder Woman during an early encounter.

But then her body starts literally turning into an animalistic Cheetah, which honestly looked and felt ridiculous. Not all comic book transformations translate smoothly to the silver screen, but this is definitely one of the worst in the DCEU, especially if you consider CGI-only ones. She has a pretty remarkable battle with Diana at the very end of the movie.

Of course she’s defeated, and I couldn’t remember if she actually survived or not, because it’s been about five years since I’ve seen the movie. Apparently they didn’t make that super clear, but she does survive and presumably renounced her wish, which made her go back to normal. Or at least Maxwell Lord’s grand unwishing did it.
