The 1961 film West Side Story is based on the 1957 Broadway musical of the same name, which itself was inspired by Romeo and Juliet. The tragic love story between Tony and Maria mirrors the famous Shakespearean romance, but instead of feuding families in the Italian city of Verona, the conflict is reimagined as rival street gangs battling for territory in 1950s New York City.

When West Side Story premiered on October 18, 1961, it quickly became the highest grossing movie of the year, earning about $44.1 million worldwide. Adjusted for modern inflation, that is roughly equivalent to around $475 million today, proving the musical’s appeal reached far beyond traditional theater audiences.

At the 1962 Academy Awards, West Side Story won an astonishing 10 Oscars from 11 nominations, including Best Picture. This still holds the record for the most Academy Awards ever won by a musical film, making it one of the most decorated movie musicals in history.

The Academy Award for Best Director for West Side Story was shared by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins, marking the first time in Oscar history that two directors shared the award for the same movie.

Although she played Maria on screen, Natalie Wood did not sing most of the character’s songs in West Side Story. Her vocals were dubbed by professional singer Marni Nixon, who secretly provided singing voices for many famous actresses in Hollywood musicals.

The character Tony in West Side Story was played by Richard Beymer, but he also did not sing his own songs. His vocals were performed by singer Jimmy Bryant, continuing the film’s heavy use of “ghost singers” behind the scenes.

Before Richard Beymer was cast as Tony, many major stars were considered for the role, including Elvis Presley, Warren Beatty, Burt Reynolds, Marlon Brando, and Robert Redford.

Elvis Presley nearly played Tony in West Side Story, but his manager, Colonel Tom Parker, rejected the role, believing it was not the right project for the rock and roll superstar.

The role of Maria almost went to other famous actresses such as Audrey Hepburn and Suzanne Pleshette before the filmmakers ultimately cast Natalie Wood after seeing footage from her film Splendor in the Grass. Ironically, the character is Puerto Rican.

Choreographer Jerome Robbins was famously perfectionistic during filming of West Side Story, often requiring dozens of retakes for dance sequences and extensive rehearsals that pushed the production schedule far behind.

Because of those delays, director Robert Wise eventually fired Jerome Robbins from the production after 45 days of shooting, when the movie was already 24 days behind schedule.

Despite being fired, Jerome Robbins still received co director credit on West Side Story because his choreography and creative vision were considered essential to the movie’s success.

Several dancers and performers were injured during the intense rehearsals and filming of the dance scenes in West Side Story due to the physically demanding choreography created by Jerome Robbins.

Some scenes of West Side Story were filmed on location in Manhattan, including a playground at East 110th Street that introduced the rival gangs during the opening sequence.

Although the story takes place in New York City, much of West Side Story was actually filmed on sound stages at the Samuel Goldwyn Studios in West Hollywood, California.

Actress Rita Moreno won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance as Anita in West Side Story, becoming one of the first Latina actresses to win an Oscar.

George Chakiris also won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Bernardo, the leader of the Sharks gang.

Despite its popularity, not every critic loved West Side Story. Film critic Pauline Kael famously dismissed the movie as “frenzied hokum.”

The film’s budget was about $6.75 million, which was considered expensive for a musical in 1961 but ultimately proved worthwhile due to its massive box office success. Even though the film grossed tens of millions of dollars, the distributor United Artists only made about $2.5 million in profit because many participants had negotiated shares of the earnings.

In 1997, West Side Story was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress because of its cultural and historical significance.

In the “Beat It” music video, Michael Jackson even plays the role of a peacemaker between rival gangs, echoing the themes of reconciliation found in West Side Story.

The enduring popularity of West Side Story eventually led to a new film adaptation directed by Steven Spielberg, which was released in 2021 and introduced the classic musical story to a new generation of audiences.
