Things I Like: Robert DuBois/Bloodsport (DCEU)

Idris Elba as Robert DuBois Bloodsport in The Suicide Squad DCEU film dc comics

Robert DuBois, better known as Bloodsport, technically serves as the lead character in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. It seems like they originally wanted Will Smith to return as Deadshot, but there were scheduling conflicts. So they brought in Idris Elba to play a similar yet distinct character, and it is safe to say not many female fans complained about the English actor taking the role.

Very similar to Deadshot, Robert DuBois is a mercenary for hire who ends up in prison and separated from his daughter. James Gunn even leans into how similar some DC characters can be, with Bloodsport pointing out that Peacemaker basically does the same thing he does. In the DCEU, he was hired to take out Superman and managed to hit the Man of Steel with a Kryptonite bullet. It was not fatal, but it was probably the most damage Superman took in that cinematic universe, even if it happened off screen.

I actually prefer him over Will Smith’s Deadshot. He does not take everything as seriously as Floyd Lawton did, and his rivalry with Peacemaker adds a lot to the movie. Despite being a criminal, he clearly has a good side.

He technically fails his mission, which was to help Amanda Waller prevent the world from discovering that the US government had been experimenting on an alien starfish capable of global domination. Somehow, though, the team manages to fail successfully, and Waller initially tells them the job is done. Instead, they choose to help the people who are about to be destroyed by the creature, even though Waller nearly has them killed for their defiance.

With his leadership, they ultimately save the day with relatively minimal casualties. Waller probably should have had him lead the first mission on the island, which went so badly. It is a shame the DCEU fell apart not long after, because this character really only got one shot on the big screen.
