Nanaue, better known as King Shark, was one of the best characters in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad movie in the DCEU. I also really enjoyed that he was voiced by Sylvester Stallone.

In the DCEU, he is stated to believe he descends from a shark god. I don’t think they ever explained what he actually did to end up in prison, but he remains a prisoner of the same high-security facility as the rest of his future teammates. I know this is a comic book world, but could you imagine if a shark creature like this actually existed in prison? That’s a whole bunch of bad ideas rolled into one, and they technically legally could have just euthanized him.

He didn’t really have any special powers beyond being a humanoid shark. But his skills in the movie were absolutely brutal. He would sneak up behind bad guys and finish them off exactly how you’d expect a shark would. I’d rather have Darkseid laser beam me in the forehead.

He has some hilarious moments with the team, especially when he tried to eat Ratcatcher 2 when he got hungry at night. And ironically, she ended up becoming his best friend.

King Shark manages to survive the events of the film, though not before getting badly hurt by the gigantic starfish Starro. And unlike the first Suicide Squad film, the entire team is able to go free after the events of the movie, since they use their knowledge of the incident the government wanted to cover up to their advantage. It’s a bit of a shame that the DCEU basically imploded after this and we never got more of King Shark.
