Things I Like: Hespera (DCEU)

Hespera was one of the major antagonists in the second Shazam movie, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, in the DC Extended Universe. Played by Helen Mirren, she actually made a very memorable impression on me. Despite the fact that, by the time this movie came out, we kind of knew the DCEU was probably going to implode on itself and reboot with entirely new movies and actors.

Helen Mirren as Hespera sitting on a dark, ornate throne flanked by stone statues while wearing her signature battle armor in Shazam! Fury of the Gods.

She is the obvious leader of the three daughters of the Greek god Atlas, making her distantly related to Wonder Woman, since the DCEU has established Diana Prince as the daughter of Zeus. I will say that Diana Prince is much easier on the eyes than that old lady.

I can’t remember everything in great detail, but her main motivation was to steal the power of the wizard Shazam and Billy Batson. I thought it was hilarious that she confronted him in that fast food restaurant, as it really didn’t fit her aesthetic at all, but it worked well for the quirky comedy of the movie.

Rachel Zegler as Anthea extending her hand next to Helen Mirren as Hespera, who holds a glowing blue staff against a sunset city skyline in Shazam! Fury of the Gods.

It is also revealed that the beautiful young lady Anne was actually her youngest sister, Anthea. Her baby sister becomes the first of the trio to double-think their plan. Her motivation for that shift was falling for a young man.

While Hespera changes sides somewhat after her sister Kalypso, played by Lucy Liu, double-crosses her and has her dragon land a mortal wound. I imagine superhero movies was probably not on Helen Mirren’s list of things to do. But I’m sure she didn’t hate the paycheck, though. She did a fine job given the circumstances at the end of the day.
