Augusta Street Pizza is the newest pizza spot to open near our home in Greenville, South Carolina, and it sits close to some of the more upscale residential areas in that part of our city. My son used to attend daycare nearby, my father-in-law lives just a minute down the road, and my wife works two streets away. I was genuinely hoping this could become a regular lunch spot for the two of us on days when I am off and she is working. One afternoon during summer break, with the kids in tow, we decided to give it a try.

The concept centers on Roman-style pizza, which was not something I had much familiarity with before this place opened. Their whole pies are on the pricier side, somewhere in the twenty to forty dollar range depending on toppings, but buying by the slice at lunch is considerably more reasonable. I think the total for everyone’s slices and drinks came to just over twenty dollars.

Unfortunately the pizza did not win us over, and that went for everyone at the table despite the place carrying strong reviews on Google. The texture reminded me of deep dish pizza from Little Caesars in a way, with that same airy, fluffy quality on top. The issue was the bottom crust, which was hard enough to put me off entirely. I am simply not someone who enjoys that kind of base on a pizza. The crust was also very well done, as you can see in the photo, which is another thing I tend to avoid. They also offer gelato, which everyone else seemed to enjoy, though I did not have any. I do think Augusta Street Pizza has a strong future ahead of it in Greenville. The concept fits the neighborhood and the reviews suggest plenty of people genuinely love it. I just wish it had clicked for me, because the location would have been perfect for casual lunches. As it stands, I doubt we will make a return trip.
