I was a big fan of most of the X-Men movies, but some of them were duds. Most of the X-Men films start off strong with a reboot but soon start to fizzle out. I wasn’t a big fan of X-Men: Apocalypse but I had hope in a sequel to it. But Dark Phoenix is really close to the third X:Men film as the story is about the same but with different actors. But I was willing to give it a try.
The story takes place sometime after the events of the last film. The X:Men are not really fighting a big foe or alien force. But they go out to space to rescue some astronauts from a cosmic event. Jean Grey uses her powers to save the day but she seems to be lost in the energy of the cosmos. But she soon reappears but with an energy force that seems to be controlling her more than she’s controlling it.
It doesn’t take long for her teammates to realize that she is not the same person she once was. We also see clips of Jean’s past as a little girl where she indirectly caused the death of her mother. Jean is really going to be upset when Charles Xavier tells her something that will shake her world forever. She trusted her teacher so much, but he kept a secret too big to hide and all the explosive energy is waiting to come out.
Jean Grey gets “help” from Vuk, a shape-shifting alien with a very nefarious plot. Vuk knows that Jean has an incredible power within herself. Vuk acts like a friend but she’s really an enemy. Jean has to control her powers before things get out of control. Because if Vuk gets her power then the whole world might be doomed forever.
Overall I found Dark Phoenix to be a better film than I expected originally. X-Men: Apocalypse is a pretty dull movie and I kinda expected more of the same from Dark Phoenix. Granted it’s far from the best X-Men movie ever made and the Deja Vu between it and the third X-Men movie is pretty obvious. I was just surprised how entertained I was by the movie, because I wasn’t really bored for almost any of it which is kind of rare for any movie with me. But I do hope this is the last X-Men film of its kind and the new X-Men movies can now be part of the MCU with a fresh reboot.
