Valerian was an Emperor of the Roman Empire in the 3rd century. He was captured in a war against the Persian Empire (Sasanian Empire) and died as a POW of his Iranian rival Emperor Shapur I. This was the first time a Roman Emperor had been a prisoner of war, and it caused great disruption and instability in the Roman Empire because of this.
