
The first English prince to use the title Prince of Wales was the future King Edward II. A popular but most likely false story from the 16th century said that King Edward I promised the Welsh, a prince born in Wales who did not speak a word of English, before presenting his infant son. One of the reasons the story is most likely a fable, is at the time of Edward I’s reign, French was still the official and de facto language of royalty and nobles in England. Though, Edward II was born in Wales.
