Fun Fact: Stone of Scone

Fun facts about Scotland

The Stone of Scone is a block of red sandstone used in the coronation of Scottish monarchs. King Edward I of England took it as a spoil of war and used it to claim his right as “Lord Paramount” of Scotland which was a claim that he was rightfully above Scotland’s king.

  1. The Stone was recently (within the last 10 years?) returned to its rightful owners, the people of Scotland. However, they agreed to loan it back to England when a new monarch needs to be crowned. Then England will return it again.

I’ve seen the ancient Coronation Chair at Westminster Abbey, with its special slot for the Stone under the seat, as pictured in the illustration. Very impressive!

    1. Yeah, technically they are the rightful monarchs of Scotland
