Space Channel 5: Part 2 (Xbox Live Arcade) Review

Space Channel 5: Part 2 Xbox live arcade cover

I remember hearing about Space Channel 5 back in the early 2000s when it landed on the Sega Dreamcast. I wanted to wait for Sega to release the first game on Xbox Live Arcade, but I broke down and got Part 2. A friend told me that both games were very similar so I figured they just got the sequel on Xbox Live Arcade.

Besides Dance Dance Revolution, Space Channel 5 was one of the few musical series available. However it isn’t like DDR or later series like Guitar Hero or Donkey Konga. It isn’t based around a musical instrument or movement. It’s basically a glamorous version of Simon Sez.

Which is a decent concept and all, but honestly I didn’t dig it very much. While Simon Sez provided me with some fun in the past, Space Channel 5 is not doing the same. While I can remember all the steps chanted at me by the bad guys, I can’t really catch the rhythm. There’s really no visual bar to help you out, which really bites. And I think the Xbox 360 controller isn’t responsive enough for me to hit the perfect notes to surpass the next challenge.

While I really admire the graphics, music, and style of the game; I really was let down with Space Channel 5: Part 2. The difficulty is so harsh that I didn’t get very far, and that didn’t mix well with my lack of musical talent. While I put some blame on the controls, I really can’t recommend this game to many people. If you consider yourself a musician, this might be the game for you. However I’m calling it quits on the series.

Score: 3 out of 10
