Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (1993 Film) Review

Batman: Mask of the Phantasm movie poster

Since I never really watched the 90’s Batman cartoon as a kid, I totally missed out on Batman: Mask of the Phantasm back in 1993. I’m a pretty big comic book nerd now and there are plenty of things I have definitely missed out on. I did hear that this Dark Knight tale was exceptionally good by fans.

The first murder by the Phantasm Batman: Mask of the Phantasm

The story obviously takes place in Gotham city. A gangster one day spots a hooded figure greet him as his “angel of death.” No matter what he tries to do, the hooded figure easily outmatches him and sends him to an early grave. Unfortunately, some living witnesses falsely think they saw Batman.

Andrea Beaumont and Bruce Wayne Batman: Mask of the Phantasm

Speaking of Batman, his former love Andrea Beaumont has arrived back to town. She doesn’t seem to want to rekindle their old romance, but they do become aware of each other. She was the only woman that Bruce Wayne contemplated giving up his alter-ego for.

Sal and Joker Batman: Mask of the Phantasm

The killings by the Phantasm has made most of the gangsters in Gotham highly terrified. One of the oldest gangsters is convinced that it is Batman who has broken his vow not to kill. So he begs the Joker to take out the Dark Knight as he’s the only one capable of doing it. But even the Clown Prince of Crime doesn’t believe that the heroic Batman is behind the gruesome murders.

Batman vs Joker Batman: Mask of the Phantasm

I will say Mask of the Phantasm is a pretty good Batman movie. I was spoiled on the ending many years ago, so maybe that’s why I’m not as impressed as I wanted to be. It’s certainly not the best animated Batman movie ever made, but definitely among the better ones.

Score: B
