Video Game History: Viewtiful Joe: Red Hot Rumble

While the first two Viewtiful Joe games were pretty straightforward, it didn’t take Capcom long to make a spin-off game. Viewtiful Joe: Red Hot Rumble was a fighting game similar to Super Smash Bros. or Powerstone.

The story of the game was actually based on the anime series, with Captain Blue starting a tournament. While there was a single-player mode, multiplayer was apparently the big draw. It featured most of the classic characters (the PSP version had even more) from Viewtiful Joe to start your own brawl.

While I loved the series, I stayed away from the game after seeing it barely getting average scores from critics. Being such a fan of Super Smash Bros., I could only seeing this as a probably disappointing adventure. But I’ll give Capcom credit for at least trying to make a Smash Bros. alternative.
