Things I Like: Tales From Earthsea (2006 Film)

Tales From Earthsea 2006 movie Studio Ghibli poster

I remember seeing the boxart of Tales from Earthsea while looking at anime section at Walmart years ago. I could tell that it was a Studio Ghibli film, but compared to My Neighbor Totoro or Spirited Away, nobody ever really talked about it, good or bad. It looked interesting, and I did enjoy the movie.

The movie revolves around a young boy named Arren. He’s a prince from a kingdom, but other things start controlling him at times. This other self causes him murder his father, albeit rather randomly. After committing regicide and patricide, Arren flees the kingdom.

He eventually runs into Sparrowhawk, the wizard who’s considered the best of all the land. The archmage decides to make him his friend.

Arren eventually meets a girl named Therru and she’s a bit of a loner. But there’s something very special about her.

The one that they should all fear is the dark wizard Lord Cob. He was once very well acquainted with Sparrowhawk and deeply envies his power.

If I’m being honest, I did like the movie but it’s definitely one of the worst films that Studio Ghibli created. The story is decent but there’s a lot about the plot that makes you scratch your head and wonder. Critics and audiences apparently were mixed about it and I don’t exactly blame anyone for hating it.
