The Soviet Union originally endorsed Cho Man-sik because of his popularity, as he was famous for resistance against Japan. But because he wasn’t a communist and also a Christian, he fell out of favor and was originally put under arrest in a hotel. Being vocal against the Communists in charge, it’s heavily believed he was executed during the Korean War.
