During the reign of King James I of England, Frances Howard married Robert Devereux, 3rd Earl of Essex. They were both young and he went to war without consummation. Their marriage ended as she took another nobleman as her lover. She was found guilty of a crime later in life and her ex husband was part of the jury and he recommended death, but her life was spared.
