Peter Pan & Wendy is among the latest movies to be a live-action remake of a previous Disney film. Unlike The Little Mermaid, this one went straight to Disney+. Which is usually more of a bad omen than a good sign.

But to be fair, it’s not a straight up remake. There are a few variations to the story. But the gist of it is about the same. Peter Pan shows up to find more Lost Boys.

And eventually he meets Wendy Darling and their paths collide. For which it will change their lives forever.

The casting of the movie is actually the biggest change for the whole Peter Pan thing. He’s played by an Indian kid named Alexander Molony and he does a decent job. It’s just hard to imagine him as Peter Pan in my mind.

Ever Anderson (daughter of Milla Jovovich) who plays Wendy Darling is the MVP of the movie. Both in the plot and in acting skill alone.

I didn’t realize Jude Law played Captain Hook until I looked it up. He’s not a bad evil pirate but I’ve seen a lot better Hooks in other Peter Pan stories.

This is also the first movie to portray a black woman (Yara Shahidi) as Tinkerbell. Walt Disney is committed to diversity now, but it does seem a bit out of place. And since we don’t hear her speak for the majority of the movie, this role is more forgettable than not.

Ironically this is the movie that actually casted Tiger Lily with a Native American girl that the character actually is. And I give them a big bravo for that. Tiger Lily was often casted by Caucasian actresses, even big budget movies wouldn’t even use a Latina girl.

The problem with Peter Pan & Wendy is the fact that it’s too different for its own good and too similar to stand out. While that sounds like an oxymoron, it makes sense. It’s not a bad movie by any means, but I almost regretted watching the thing. If this somehow becomes a beloved classic in a few decades, I will be beyond shocked, as there’s no magic here.
That stinks. I was hoping for a better review as I have this one in my playlist to watch soon. Tiger Lily is so pretty, so I may watch it anyway just to see her part.
