Paolo was probably Rachel’s first on-screen boyfriend on the sitcom Friends, if I’m not mistaken. She actually meets him in the apartment building during a New York City blackout.

Rachel is so infatuated with his rugged Italian good looks, that she entirely ignores the fact that he can’t speak more than a few words of English. And she definitely doesn’t speak any Italian.

It all goes wrong when he goes to get a massage from Phoebe. And he uses it as a opportunity to make an advance on her, for which she refuses.

Which goes to prove that Phoebe is a really good friend. She quickly told Rachel and was heartbroken over it. And Rachel is quick to dump her Italian beau to the curb.
