I will admit that back in the day, I had no idea that Knuckles’ Chaotix even existed. We didn’t have many extra dollars for video games, so we definitely were not going to spend any extra dough on this or the 32X console that Sega stupidly made. How did I play this you may wonder? Let’s just say I went the yo ho ho route, but there was no legitimate way to get the game without buying the hardware and a copy of the game used.

Knuckles’ Chaotix on paper seems like a wonderful idea. Knuckles was such a great character and giving him his own game didn’t seem that far-fetched. But kind of like what Sony experienced with the Spider-Man without Spider-Man movies, turns out it was complete garbage.

It looks and plays a lot like the classic 2D Genesis games, but the big difference was the tethering ring system.

If you watch videos of it, it doesn’t seem so bad. But trying to play with it was just awful and confusing. Sega had a better idea just having Tails follow Sonic around without you having to worry about coordinating the two. This kind of idea may have worked for slower game like Mario, but for Sonic… it was all kinds of terrible ideas rolled into one.

Graphically it does do some cool stuff for the time it was released. But all this was shattered when somebody played a PlayStation or a Nintendo 64.

And the “friends” that Knuckles had in the game were so horribly designed. The Pokemon team created about 300 something Pokemon before really entering the realm of what are they doing? But it only took Sega about 4 cartoon animals to completely lose focus. Sonic CD for example was brutally missed by a lot of fans because of the sales of its platform, But you don’t miss anything if you’ve never played Knuckles’ Chaotix. There’s a reason Sega isn’t very eager to make it available on legitimate emulating platforms.
