The harmonica is a versatile musical instrument; it can be found in many genres, including blues, jazz, classical, rock, and country.

The harmonica was invented in the early 19th century in Europe, but a similar free-reed instrument existed in China called the sheng. Before the 19th century was over, the production of harmonicas had actually become a fairly big business.

Harmonicas were very popular with soldiers during the American Civil War, both on the Union side and the Confederate side. Abraham Lincoln often kept one in his pocket. Another president who enjoyed playing the harmonica was Calvin Coolidge.

Musicians in Hong Kong created the largest harmonica ensemble with 6,131 players, easily shattering the previous record of 3,893.

  2. It’s a fun instrument and the skill involved can be truly impressive. My friend’s father got into it in retirement. He’s now obsessed and even built a harmonica room in his house. He brings a special collection with him wherever he goes and, unfortunately, drives us all crazy with it when he visits.
