Croc: Legend of the Gobbos was developed by Argonaut Games, the same company behind the FX chip for the Super Nintendo, which gave the system the ability to produce 3D graphics.

Croc: Legend of the Gobbos was originally conceived as a game for the Nintendo 64 and was actually intended to be part of the Mario franchise. The initial concept aimed to combine elements of Super Mario World with Super Mario Kart, and the project was going to be called Yoshi Racing. Nintendo was initially enthusiastic about the idea, but ultimately, they rejected the proposal.

Following Nintendo’s cancellation of the project, Argonaut Games sought another publisher and replaced Yoshi with a completely original character.

Not surprisingly, Croc: Legend of the Gobbos only released on competing platforms such as the PlayStation 1, Sega Saturn, and Windows PC.

The health system in Croc: Legend of the Gobbos was partly inspired by the ring system from the Sonic the Hedgehog series.

Despite its similarities to Super Mario 64, Croc: Legend of the Gobbos is not an open-world game but rather a linear platformer. The original release also only supported the D-Pad for movement, making the game more difficult to control.

The game had a slightly different prototype title: Croc: The Quest for the Gobbos.

The European version of Croc: Legend of the Gobbos actually included difficulty settings that made the game easier than in other regions.

A portable version was also being developed for the Nintendo Game Boy, but that version of Croc was canceled midway through development.
