2B is the main protagonist of the video game NieR: Automata. I didn’t play the game right away, but even before I did, I knew how popular she was as a video game character—and there are quite a few reasons for that, some of which aren’t exactly “honorable.”

When the game begins, 2B is one of many androids fighting on behalf of humanity against literal robots. Technically, she’s a robot herself, but she’s a badass one. For many lonely fans with no girlfriends, she quickly became iconic—thanks to her beauty, her mysterious demeanor, and the fact that the game doesn’t shy away from showing what she wears under her dress.

I don’t think I unlocked all of the costumes in the game, but I thought her inverted outfit was pretty cool.

Gameplay-wise, 2B is like a ninja android, and she’s a lot of fun to control in combat. There are moments where she seems kind of vulnerable, but then other scenes show her slicing through high-level enemies like they’re made of butter.

The story was especially interesting as it unfolded. 2B gradually became more human in her emotions—and ironically, the enemy robots were going through the same kind of transformation, just in a different way.

One of the most touching parts of the story was how much she clearly cared about 9S, especially when he went missing. What she did to avenge him after he was hurt by those weird-looking enemies really stuck with me.

I haven’t played through all three endings, but I’d like to think that 2B and 9S got some kind of happy ending in at least one of them. Honestly, I’m surprised PlatinumGames hasn’t released a full sequel yet.
