Grand Theft Auto 1 was almost called Race’n’Chase where you were a policeman trying to get the criminals instead of the other way around.

GTA 1 actually has three cities which are Liberty City, San Andreas, and Vice City and every city has two levels. These cities would be the setting for all the PS2 games but their similarities are very minor.

The game was released on PC, PS1, and strangely enough Game Boy Color. With the PC version being the best in graphics and power. The GBC version was heavily censored and edited.

The game also had 7 radio stations which would be a staple in the series. The GBC version had to do its own 8-bit instrumental tracks.

The game was controversial from the start but not as much as III as the game was still basic and 2D. Rockstar used the controversy to market the video game. It sold 1 million copies in a year.

Pac-Man’s chasing gameplay served as a major inspiration when making GTA 1.

The PS1 version lacks the trains that are featured in the PC original.
